Balms Away

Always remember to remove your makeup, your face will thank you…

eye makeup break up

Hands down, this is the best makeup remover I have tried!!!

There are times where you try a product and you know instantly whether or not you will re-purchase it. This is something that I am glad I accidentally ordered two of.

I ordered this from Hautelook a few weeks ago and it arrived last week along with the Staniac lip/cheek tint. It is no surprise that both products from theBalm have become my favorite everyday items.

I wasn’t sure how I would best be able to show you how this would work. I knew it would be hard to take pictures with my camera and do a pictorial. Hence the reason why I created a video!!

What makeup remover is your favorite?

I love earth tones…

kat von d look one

I recently purchased one of Kat Von D’s “True Romance” trio eye shadow palette in “Dreamer”. I bought it because I love earth tone colors and have been wanting to try her beauty line. The Sephora in my city had a few of her trio eye shadow palettes on clearance for $10.  On the Sephora website it costs $24. I will repeat myself again, look through the clearance section when you shop it will not hurt!!

kat von d palette colloage

The colors are neutral and blend well. You can create a very simple look or make it dramatic by adding the darkest color to your crease, outer corner of your eyelid, and lining the bottom lash line.

Here is the look I created…

kat von d palette look one

Confession: I have used this palette almost everyday since I bought it last Saturday.

I used the middle color on my lid.

The darkest color is part way in my crease and outer corner of lid. I also lined my bottom lash line using the darkest color.

The lightest shimmery color was used on the inner corner of my lid.

I didn’t think I would love this palette as much as I do. I loved the colors, but I wasn’t sure how the colors would go with my skin tone. This has been my go to palette for the past week. I think it is a necessity for a simple everyday look. If you have access to her beauty line, try it!!

Have you tried any of Kat Von D’s products? If so, what do you recommend?  If not, what are you wanting to try?

Greatest Lesson

Writing was my first lover…

I have been writing since I was 11 years old. My mother passed away shortly after my 11th birthday and I needed an outlet. My 5th grade teacher gave me a journal and a stuffed monkey who I deemed “Mr. Monkey”. Just a side note, I slept with that monkey until I was 18 and now my son sleeps with it. I started writing in that journal as soon as I got it and I haven’t stopped writing.

I write words as if they are blood seeping onto paper. My heart, soul, thoughts, desires, everything comes out onto paper.

My mother passing left my world shattered in a million pieces and fucked me up in more ways than I care to realize. For some reason, death has been a constant passenger in my car and takes a piece of me each time. However, I must say there is a silver lining. I must say, if I had to go through everything I have gone through again to get to this very moment, I would do it in a heart beat. From my mother passing I learned that you never, not once, take the life you were blessed with for granted. You savor every single moment you are presented with good and bad. No matter how bad you think your life is, trust me, it could be so much worse. I am 24 and felt like I have lived and endured more than what one human being should have to endure in their lifetime. I know that you must always, always have relentless perseverance with whatever challenge you are faced with. You don’t give up because that is too damn easy. You keep fighting until the very last breath escapes your lips. That right there, is what will give you life.

My Holy Grail Skin Care Regimen {Starting Off}

I have decided to take part in the “Starting Off Project” which is a series of posts designed to help someone who is just diving into the wonderful world of beauty. It will last for 10 weeks and each week highlights a different topic. This weeks topic is skincare.

I have stressed on here before how crucial it is to have a skincare regimen as part of your daily routine. Your skin is your canvas, you need to have a great canvas to start with…

fresh face

This is me, rolling out of bed, fresh faced. Not bragging, just showing you what my skin and face looks like without the makeup.

Before I show you the pretty pictures of my skin care products let me enlighten you on my skin care journey. When I was in high school, I had acne. I don’t mean the occasional pimple here and there that a “zit zapper” could take care of. I mean, I had acne. My cheeks would break out extremely bad and the area right where my jaw bone is. Needless to mention, I had breakouts on my chest and back. It was bad and I was unhappy and it didn’t help my self confidence at all. I went to countless dermatologist and was on countless creams. Creams that would bleach anything my face would touch. Eventually, my millionth dermatologist (yes, I am being a drama queen right there) recommended accutane. Accutane, which I believe is not available in the US due to the horrendous side effects some people have been faced with, is a powerful acne medication. I was at my last resort. I know some people think “Why don’t you just wash your face more often?” No, it is so much deeper than that (literally) it comes down to genetics and the makeup of your skin. I was scrubbing my face until it was raw and I would still experience break outs. I started taking accutane my senior year in highschool (’07) and it immediately cleared up my skin. However, along with the clear skin came the extremely dry, sensitive skin.  Another side effect was the really bad joint pains (which I still get). With the power of the drug, came the side affects. In all honesty, I probably would do it again if I had to repeat my high school years (Not that I would willingly repeat high school I loathed it) . Maybe I am just vain, but having clear and healthy skin is important to me.

However, post accutane I still didn’t have a skin regimen in place. My skin was clear, but I don’t really believe it was healthy. Finally, now that I am 24 (you do the math for how many years it took me to get a good skin regimen) I have found and discovered the beauty behind a good skincare regimen.

What I am using now…

skincare so

I introduce you to my holy grail skincare regimen.

  • H2O Marine Daily Hydrator (oil-free)– this moisturizer is the truth. It is fragrance free and it doesn’t just sit on your skin. I have tried moisturizers that seem to just sit on my skin over night and never really soak in. My skin tends to still be oily, so that whole sitting on the skin business is a no go for me. Even though my skin is oily, after washing it it feels very dry. A light, hydrating moisturizer is all I need for my skin to feel great!
  • Peter Thomas Roth Glycolic 3% face wash– this face wash is meant to soften and exfoliate the skin. It is anti-aging, but bought it to clarify my skin and even out my skin tone. Which it has done, and it has done it well. I use this face wash in the morning time.
  • Clarisonic– I absolutely love my clarisonic. It leaves my face feeling extremely clean and I can tell my skin has benefited from using it regularly. I use it twice a day, morning and night.
  • Korres Milk & Protein foaming cream cleanser– I recently just purchased this at Sephora, about a month ago, and it is such an amazing product.  It is a gentle cleanser that is soap-free. It removes all the impurities and hydrates your skin at the same time. I use this at night before I go to sleep because it removes all the makeup, and other gunk from the day, off of my face.  This is on clearance right now at my local Sephora for only $4.99 and online it is $21.00!! I am telling you, look out for their clearance products because they have a lot of good deals!!

Now, I leave you hoping that you understand the importance of a good skin care regimen. Please check out my previous post with a more in depth review of the Clarisonic and Peter Thomas Roth face wash.

Please keep in mind that this is what works for ME. What works for one person may not work for the next one and it may not work for me a year from now. However, I do hope that you are able to find this article helpful and maybe add one of these products to your regimen! Remember, do not get discouraged if something doesn’t work out, it does take time.

theBalm Beauty Queen {Stainiac}

Stainiac is a must have item!!

A few weeks ago Hautelook had a sale event featuring theBalm beauty products. Before than, I had not tried any of their products and was intrigued by their Staniac lip/cheek tint and the “Balms Away Eye Makeup Break-Up” (the eye makeup remover will be reviewed at a later date).

I finally received my package today, needless to say, I could not wait to try out both products! Today I wore the Stainiac lip/cheek tint…

I purchased this for $8 on the Hautelook website.

stainiac 2

I have tried many lip stains and this one has truly kept it’s promise (plus more)!

stainiac for blog 2

The stainiac lip tint gave my lips a nice color and my cheeks maintained a nice flushed hue all day long. Please note that the colors are a bit darker in person.

  • The color lasts all day long. It truly is a stain, I was able to apply lip gloss over it and the lip tint color did not budge.
  • I was worried that the color wouldn’t go well on my cheeks but I am pleased with the results.
  • The color is a natural color, and you can build up the color intensity.
  • It is a gel, for some reason I love gel products.

  • At this point in time, nothing.

I would highly recommend this to my friends and followers. It is an amazing versatile product and I can’t rave enough about it!! I must admit at first I was weary that this would not show up on my darker skin tone but I am beyond pleased with it.

Nude Lips-Part Two {Nude Lips for a Woman of Color}

Sometimes, it is better to have more than one option…

Last Sunday, I wrote a post about finding my perfect nude lip and it happens to be my most popular post. I hope that it has helped someone, or even a few of you, on the hunt for your perfect nude lip shade!

Now, I must say, it seems as though the nude lip phenomenon is more accommodating to people who have fairer skin (not to say a fair skinned person has never struggled finding their perfect shade).  On my quest I found the shades for my skin were either too light or too dark. I am here to tell you, there are options out there for you (dark or light) but you just have to experiment and see what works for you.

I wanted to share with you another great nude lip combo I have found…well, I actually created this one.

nude lips part two 2 items

nude lip part two rimmel 1

The Khroma Beauty duo is part of the “Au Naturel” set I talked about in my first nude lip post .

The matte lipstick is from Kate for Rimmel can be purchased at Walmart for $3.97

The flower beauty lip gloss is from Walmart as well and cost $6.98

If you don’t want to invest in the au naturel set but like the Kate lipstick and the flower lip gloss, buy a lip liner that matches your natural lip line.

Okay, so what does this combo look like?

Amazing would be the correct term.

nude lips part two two

For this look I lined my lips using the Khorma “In the Buff” lip liner and I than put the Kate lipstick on.

nude lip part two three

Here, I added the flower beauty lip gloss on top of the lipstick and liner.
