Curls, Red Lips, and Where Have I been?

Good Morning Beauties wherever you are! It is so nice to be back on the blogsphere. There were things going on in my life that caused me to put my blog on the back burner. When I write a post I like to put thought and energy into it. Simply, I don’t like doing a half ass job on anything that has my name attached to it.

The weather if finally warming up here in the Evergreen State and the burn of the sun could not be anymore welcomed!

I took this picture on Monday and that is the first day in awhile that I have done a full face of makeup. I also tried a new method of curling my hair and when I took it out in the morning I thought “What the hell have I done?” and then I fell in love with it. It takes me awhile to get use to even the simplest of hair changes.

Eyes: I used Coastal Scents 120 Palette #5. Let me say this, I was not too impressed with the color pay off. Even after using NYX eyeshadow base the peach color was still very subtle. I have noticed that the colors from the palette either have great color pay off or it is so subtle even after slathering it on.

Lips: I used Jordana’s Easyliner for lips in “Sedona Red” and Wet n Wild’s lipstick in Cherry Picking. Believe me when I tell you that Wet n Wild lipsticks have great pigment! I think they range anywhere from 69 cents (on sale) to $1 and some change.

Brows: Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade in Ebony. I L-O-V-E the pomade. Gives me amazing brows and I don’t have to worry about smudging or fading. My friend Amy of Llewsoba has an amazing review of the pomade up on her blog. I feel like the pomade has been reviewed a lot and her review is in depth with a lot of information and honestly, the best one I have seen. I may be bias because she is a blogging bestie of mine 😉 but she is pretty amazing!!

So, alas, the main reason as to why I have been M.I.A………

Winged eyeliner and dark lips to finish the look!

What about the movie? The movie 47 Ronin was a great movie and I really loved the story.

Any movie recommendations?

My favorite jacket…

I am an avid reader of Diana’s website Manhattan Image and Style she writes about everything from personal improvement and inspiration to beauty and style tips. I was on her website yesterday and she had this amazing outfit on , the plaid and leather made me swoon.

I have a leather jacket that I purchased a few years ago from T. J. Maxx and so I decided to run with Diana’s idea and create my own look…

I absolutely love this jacket!! I am the type of person that wears bright colors all year around regardless of whether or not the leaves are falling.

Etta’s Style Advice: You don’t have to go out and spend a ton of money on an outfit. You can use pieces that you bought a few years ago and add them to new pieces. If I see something I like, for example Diana’s outfit, I try and recreate with what I have and put my own style into it.  Your style is what sets you apart!!

Stay Inspired,

Affordable Beauty Tips

Makeup and beauty products can take a nice size portion of the money you earn…

Let’s be realistic, everyday there is a new beauty product that appears on the market that claims to be a “must have” that is better than all the rest. The beauty industry is easily a multi-billion dollar industry. It is easy to believe that fact when you have facial and makeup products going for $50 and up. It is safe to say that not everyone can afford to spend that kind of money on a regular basis on a product they simply want to try out.

I thought of a few tips to help make your beauty bill a little more manageable…

  • Research. Before trying a product research it. Read all the reviews that you can. It will be easy to realize if a product is worth the money or not when reading peoples reviews. There have been times where I want to try something out and I head to my fellow bloggers blogs and see if any of them have tried it. If I notice a trend of a product being “so-so” than I probably won’t rush out to buy. Reading reviews helps curb my urge to just go out and buy a product simply to try it.
  • Realize that what does wonders for one person may not do wonders for you. I am guilty of this. I will read a review or watch a YouTube video and I think “I need that product in my life…”. So what do I do? I go out and buy the product. I try it and than I am let down. Who is to blame? No one but myself. It really is a let down when people are raving about a product and you finally get your hands on it and it is not at all what you expected. I have to remind myself that what works for others will not necessarily work for me.
  • Ask for samples. If there is a product that I am seriously wanting but I am still unsure of whether it is worth the money or not, I ask for a sample. I don’t think drug stores have samples but I know that major department stores like Macy’s or Sephora and Origins will provide you with samples if you ask. The main reason I will ask for a sample is because I would like to see how a product will react with my skin. I don’t want to invest $40 in a facial cream if it is going to cause my skin to break out.

Sample sizes

  • Shop at a store that you can try out products. Sephora, MAC, Ulta, Origins etc. they all allow you to try on product. However, I must stress the IMPORTANCE of properly sanitizing any product before you try it on. A lot of people go through these stores and try on everything and anything. Sanitize, sanitize, sanitize. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT just pick up a lipstick, eyeshadow or whatever and try it on. SANITIZE IT. If you don’t know how, ask the consultant to do it for you.
  • Get a beauty subscription. There are a lot of beauty subscription programs out there such as Ipsy, Birchbox, Glossy Box, Julep, etc. They can range anywhere from $10 to $35 a month. A beauty subscription is a program that you sign up for and they send you deluxe size samples or full size products. Some of the subscriptions are monthly, some are every three months, and others may only be quarterly. The thing I love about beauty subscriptions are that you are able to try products you may not thinking of trying. I am currently subscribed to Ipsy and it cost $10 a month and I feel I get more than my $10 worth every month.

August Ipsy bag came with: Noya lip balm, Pacifica multi-mineral BB cream, Pixi lash booster mascara, and Michael Todd jojoba charcoal facial scrub. All for $10 a month.

  • Start at the drugstores. Drug store brands can be just as good as the higher end brands. My dear friend Donna of The Beauty Holder really made it a point, when I was searching for brow items, to start off with drugstore brands. They are cheaper and it allows you to perfect your craft before you invest in more expensive products that you may not really know how to use.
  • Clearance can be your best friend. When I walk into Sephora (okay, any store really) the first place I look is the clearance section. More often than not, they have a lot of great products that are on clearance. I have found quite a few of my favorite products on the clearance shelves. There is nothing wrong with buying something on clearance my friends.

Sand & Steel

InStyle’s September issue is 716 pages of pure inspiration.

InStyle is one magazine that I love to look at (and read). They always have usable tips and tricks. If you don’t get their magazine on the regular, September’s issue is one that you would want to get your hands on. Like I said, it is nothing but 716 pages of pure inspiration, information, and beauty!!

When I read a magazine, I fold the pages that I normally want to refer back to later on. However, in their magazine they have these little tear out pages…okay, let me just show you because it is easier to show than tell.

To me, these cards are useful because sometimes it is hard to know how to liven up a color that has been dubbed a “dull one”. It is a nice reference guide so you are able to quickly decide which colors will give a pop of color to your look but at the same time, compliment it.

With the winter month’s quickly approaching, where for some odd reason, dark colors and solid prints dominate our wardrobes. These cards will be handy!!

What colors do you have in your closet that you find hard to liven up?

One Blouse & One Look from Day to Night

Your day has been busy, but you have plans that evening and there is no time to go home and completely revamp yourself.

Have no fear! You don’t have to drive, walk, or catch a train all the way home. You can add pieces to your outfit or even remove pieces that will have you looking fab from day to night in no time!

I have a new blouse that I was piecing together to see how versatile it is with what I have in my closet. When I shop, the first thing I ask myself is “How versatile is the item?”. I am a college student and I have a family, so budgeting is a necessity. I don’t have the means, as of now, to go out and buy a new outfit each and every time my husband and I have an event or I have a meeting.

Fashion is what you buy. Style is what you do with it.

That is one of my all time favorite quotes because style is what you choose. I love the fact that you can take one item of clothing and style it in different ways and get a uniquely different look each time.

Since my day will be busy and the husband I have plans later this evening I wanted to be able to take what I have on from day to night.

It all started with…

day to night look 1.1

That I wanted to take from…

day to night look 2.1

day look

To…

day to night look 3.1

night look

During the day, I like to keep it neutral and not to saucy. I am doing school work, attending appointments, being a mom, etc all during the day. As much as I love to dress up and look fancy, I realize that wearing night wear during the day is not realistic or practical for the situations I am in. The burnt orange blazer with the ruched 3/4 length sleeves, makes this blouse professional and wearable for day time activities.

When it comes to night time, I want to jazz myself up. I love black. Black can be used as a nighttime or daytime wear color. However, with this particular blazer I am dubbing it as an event clothing item. It is dressy but still casual.

What about your makeup?

day to night makeup look 2

For the daytime makeup I wanted to keep it simple and not very dramatic. I used the Wet n Wild Fergie’s Centerstage Collection palette in “Newport Nights”. I put the lilac color on my lid (bottom right color of palette) and the gold color that is in the center of the palette on my crease. I then lined the top lashes with Cailyn’s cosmetics gel eye liner in purple. I extended that line out a little past my lashes…

Why?

For night time I wanted to do a cat eye look using the same purple eye liner and also line my bottom lashes. Like so…

night makeup look

By adding the cat eye look and adding liner to my bottom lashes, it gives my eyes a dramatic look! Now, I am ready to have a night out on the town!!

How do you transform your looks from day to night when there is not much time to spare?
